science

This is an experiment to see how leaves breathe. We caught the moisture coming out of their leaves. We tried a maple tree and an apple tree.

We got lots of water from the apple.

And a little from the maple also.

This is the kids extracting the pigment from leaves. We smashed the leaves, put them in jars with rubbing alcohol and then put the jars in a container of hot water.

An hour later we put strips of coffee filter in the jars to suck up the alcohol. It's harder to see in the pictures than in real life, but we got yellow and green pigments from each of the three types of leaves we used.

This was to show how leaves send water through their veins. We stuck leaves in purple water and then could see the water they sucked up. It didn't work great, but well enough for what we needed.
